Built in 1810 by the York family, and originally part of the Bewerley estate, Grassfield Hall was first home to a local entrepreneur Hanley Teasdale Hutchinson who ran the mines of Greenhow and rolling mill. By 1896 Major Collins, a royal surgeon and his family of seven children were in residency. His daughter Amy Collins was a talented photographer for her time and we have her to thank for the majority of photographs of the house and surrounding areas. Grassfield Hall has seen many changes over the years, even being used as a military base during the war. However, in 1975 it became open to the public as it was turned into a hotel for the first time. It stayed this way until 2001 when after closing it’s doors, it was passed to various owners with very different plans; from a private house, hotel to restaurant. All were unsuccessful and it stood empty for many years.
